Nobel Laureate Develops Nanorods LEDs for Future Displays

At Display Week 2018, the popularity of Micro LED can be seen from the keynote speech (Keynote Speech) on the opening day of the conference. In this keynote report, Zhang Deqiang, CEO of Visionox, discussed the technical prospects of OLED displays. Douglas Lanman, Ph.D of Oculus Research also discussed eye tracking technology on VR devices. Among the relevant practitioners and experts in the display field, this SID also specially invited the Nobel Prize winner in physics, Professor Hiroshi Amano of Nagoya University to share the development trend of Micro LED technology in the future.

In addition to the application prospects of LEDs in various energy-saving fields in the future, Prof. Amano Hiroshi also discussed Nanorods LEDs in the field of displays. He believes that this technology will have the opportunity to become one of the possible options in the field of displays in the future. Especially when the display resolution of consumer electronics products needs to be increased to 8K in the future, the size of the Micro LED chip needs to be less than 1µm to meet the size of the mobile phone screen. Coating these materials on small chips for light and color conversion will face considerable technical obstacles.

Therefore, the technical team in Japan is currently conducting research on Nanorods LEDs, hoping to grow RGB three different light colors directly on the chip structure through Nanorods LEDs (as shown in the schematic diagram below).

Therefore, the equipment including epitaxy growth needs to be changed, and the method of growing the epitaxy structure needs to slowly grow the epitaxy structure of heterogeneous materials through injection and interruption staggered. The epitaxial wafer realizes full-color RGB light. So when will such a black technology similar to outer space be realized? Let’s pray for the rest of our lives!
